Frequently Asked Questions
Below is a list of the most popular questions I am asked about NLP, training and one to one work. If you have any further questions than the ones listed below, or would like to discuss anything further, please contact me.
What Is NLP?
NLP, or Neuro-Linguistic Programming to give it’s full name, was developed in the 1970’s by Dr Richard Bandler and Dr John Grinder. It is described as the “study of the structure of subjective experience” and explores how we understand and interact with the world. This study has created a variety of applications in communication, therapy, and personal development. To learn more, click here to get an audio introduction to NLP and a simple and concise NLP fact sheet.
Isn’t NLP Just an Alternative Therapy?
Not at all! It may have been developed in the melting pot that was the human potential movement in the early 1970’s, studying therapists of the time, but since the early 1980’s NLP has been used in such varied fields as business, sales, sports performance, military training and education (as well as therapy!), to name a few….
In the last 5 years NLP has really expanded and become increasingly mainstream, with the NLP Practitioner certification becoming a sort after and recognised qualification and more and more organisations seeking out NLP trainings and coaches.
Why Should I Learn NLP?
NLP has many practical benefits. By training in NLP you can improve your communication and rapport building skills, your mental acuity and problem solving ability as well as undo mental blocks and “limiting beliefs” that stop you acheiving your goals. It also has many applications and can be used formally in a training or coaching situation.
How Long Does It Take?
Both the NLP Practitioner takes 7 days each (split into 2 modules of 3 days + an assessment day) and the Master Practitioner takes 8 days.
How Can You Teach NLP in Such a Short Space of Time?
NLP has been taught successful in shorter trainings since the early 1990’s. I have been running NLP trainings in 6 days with great success for the last decade. I do this by:
- Focusing on NLP methodology rather than techniques.
- Teaching in small groups with plenty of feedback and interaction.
- Offering follow up support for those questions that are bound to pop up as you practice in the “real world”.
- Trust that I can teach and you can learn NLP in that amount of time.
- Remember, like everything training, the course only gives you the knowledge and skills, you then have to integrate them. This is a process that will continue over your lifetime.
Can I Do One to One Training or Coaching?
Yes, I do one to one mentoring and coaching in NLP for those people who do not want or cannot attend a training course. Click here for more details.
What Qualification Do I Get?
You receive your qualification through the Society of NLP (SNLP), founded in 1976 by the two co-founders of NLP it is the oldest and largest NLP qualification and quality control body in the world. Your certificate will be signed by myself, John La Valle (the president of the SNLP) and Dr Richard Bandler, the co-creator of NLP.

Where Do You Run Your Training Courses?
Unless otherwise stated, all public trainings take place at:
R and R Consulting Centres
41 St Isan Road, Heath
Cardiff, CF14 4LW
Is The Course Residential? If Not Where Can I Stay?
The course isn’t residential. The venue I use is in a quiet area about 15 minutes from the city centre and about 10 minutes from junction 32 of the M4. There are a variety of hotels in the area to cater for all budgets and tastes, from the five star splendour of the Hilton and St Davids hotel, to the more modest Premier Inn.
If you are not local to Cardiff why not combine the training with a short break and enjoy the city?!
Do I Need Any Prior Training or Knowledge in NLP?
Not at all. I run all my trainings with the assumption that you are new to NLP and have no prior knowledge. They are designed to build your knowledge and skills from the ground up.
Is There Any Pre-Learning DVD’s or CD’s That I Have To Go Through?
No. Unlike some NLP training companies, I don’t believe in students booking on my course to learn NLP and then giving them a bundle of CD’s and DVD’s and expecting them to learn it all first! That is like putting the cart before the horse so to speak. I offer follow up support including telephone coaching and additional pdf’s that you will receive.
Do You Do Discounts For Group Bookings?
Yes, on my public trainings, if you book more than one place you get 10% discount on each subsequent place. If you want to run an in-house course for your employees, you can save up to £10,000, click here for details.
I Have a Friend Who Wants To Learn NLP, Do You Offer a “Finders Fee”?
Yes! It is only fair that I give you something. I give £100 per referral.
I Want To Retrain As An NLP Coach/Therapist/Trainer, Can You Help Me?
Certainly. Many people attend my training as they want to start a new or second career. I have worked with people for many years helping them set up their own businesses and written a top selling book on it here.
I Want To Use NLP Professionally, Which Qualification Do I Need?
The NLP Practitioner training is the first step on your NLP journey and ideal if you want to use NLP for personal development. If you want to use NLP professionally (as a coach or trainer for example), you really need the Master Practitioner qualification, that gives you much more skills and experience and grounds your knowledge.
Can You Do Your Trainings In-House?
Yes, I run regular in house trainings for companies and organisations, everything from one day seminars to full qualification trainings. For more information about my in house courses please click here.
Who Have You Carried Out NLP Training For?
I have worked for many companies and organisations in a wide variety of business sectors, for just a few click here.
Finally, Why Should I Train With You?!
I have over 15 years experience directly with using NLP and over a decades experience in teaching NLP. In that time I have run over 50 NLP Practitioner qualifications and have had experience in a broad number of sectors. I have run a therapy and coaching practice, I have trained blue chip companies, worked with professional sports people and appeared regulatory in the media.
I was the first person to offer NLP training in Birmingham and I am now the first person to offer a dedicated NLP training with a robust, internationally recognised qualification in Cardiff (yes, there are other people offering NLP training, but none with the same level of experience or qualification, or are offering NLP as well as something else. I ONLY offer NLP based courses, coaching and consultancy, which means I can offer dedicated high quality focused trainings).
